Autonomous Specialty Tool Delivery

At Stadler’s St. Margrethen site, workers currently spend more than 30 hours per week walking through the workshop to pick up specialty tools. These repeated trips interrupt productive work and create unnecessary movement across the production environment.

To explore a more efficient approach, a Proof of Concept was carried out to test how autonomous robots could support internal specialty tool logistics. Within a one-month timeframe, the project examined how specialty tools could be ordered, prepared, and delivered directly to workstations using an AI-supported robotic delivery process.

In the explored workflow, specialty tool orders are placed via a screen, prepared at the depot, and delivered through the workshop by an autonomous quadrupedal robot. The focus was on understanding the practical feasibility of robot-supported specialty tool deliveries in a real production environment and identifying where automation can create measurable value.

The concept also included JiVS to track logistics data and usage analytics. These insights create transparency around specialty tool demand, delivery patterns, and operational performance, providing a foundation for future improvements, deeper integration, and potential next steps in Stadler’s workshop
